PDF - Portable Document Format
Generally accepted, edit, save and Reader is available free of charge.

XPS - XML Paper Specification
Microsoft document creator and the viewer that comes with Windows Vista
Basically, a compressed XML (Extensible Markup Language). As PDF is designed to keep the design of the device used reagrdless document.

I use PDF for the moment.

PDF is still looking better. PDF is supported by almost all printers. With XPS, it is doubtful that the existing printer. Both are sure to change. PDF is more to it than just print the page. It has a dynamic format that you have any scripts, multimedia functions and forms.

The answer to your last question is yes, it can be opened in an earlier version of MS Office.
